It all started back in 1998
The Small Business Company was started in 1998 by Glen Senior as a small business education company, and since then Glen has managed over 1,000 small business workshops, written six business books, designed three small business games, built four online training programs, lectured, created insight-led content and tools, facilitated conferences and webinars and developed hundreds of small business content and engagement strategies for customers in the UK, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the USA.
From our clients and direct contact with small business owners worldwide, we’re in a unique position to comment on and support the small business industry. Our global outlook allows us to benchmark what is happening in small business, from government policy to academic research, best practice tools and what small business owners and managers do to build a better business.
Company formed to deliver small business enterprise training workshops to small business owners in partnership with the New Zealand Ministry of Commerce. Developed Kodak South East Asia’s small business program to their Kodak Express franchise owners. The Small Business Magazine started providing practical advice to small business subscribers.
Extension of the enterprise training program to 400 workshops/year. Development of ‘ecommerce’ workshops to promote the use of the internet in business. Telecom sponsors Publication of Small Business Marketing, by Senior and McBride.
Development of small business tools and business planning CDROM’s for the National Bank. Delivered small business workshops to National Bank managers to build business empathy. Created Inland Revenue’s Tool for Business, an online small business educational resource to assist users navigate tax and compliance obligations.
In partnership with Industry New Zealand, developed a series of online small business games to deliver into secondary schools to encourage entrepreneurship. Formed V Capital to deliver training and advice for small businesses seeking to raise early-stage capital. Keynote speech at the Kodak Express Conference, Malaysia.
Glen commences lecturing in Entrepreneurship at Canterbury University.
Publication of Planning for Success, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. Built the Small Business Plus CDROM for Microsoft New Zealand. Built online training courses for the NZ Tourism Industry Association, and physical workshops to tourism operators. Venture capital online game goes live. Create content for the NZ government Biz portal.
Set up The Small Business Company UK. Agreement with Microsoft UK to develop their Small Business Plus program CDROM. Assisted Barclays bank with their business manager program. Worked with ANZ Bank Australia to develop small business content.
Design and delivery of small business workshops and mentoring with the National Bank.
Publication of Small Business Survival Tactics, Senior and McBride.Delivery of Investment Ready workshops for raising capital. Developed business content for BDO accountants. UK clients HSBC Bank, Royal Mail, Intuit, Enterprise Ireland, Small Firms Enterprise Development Initiative, Lloyds TSB, Learn Direct Scotland.
Launched the Small Business Game at Wembley Stadium, an online simulation for schools in the UK and New Zealand. Supported by Microsoft, Scottish Qualifications Authority, Venture Wales, Irish Enterprise Boards, HSBC Bank, Hewlett Packard, BDO, National Bank of New Zealand and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. Contract with Microsoft USA (Seattle) to convert CDROM into their online platform (licensing content and tools inside the Microsoft ecosystem). Developed the AusTrade export awareness tool.
Developed a new online training platform (Casper) to deliver practical small business online workshops. Andy Coughlin joined as the UK managing director to manage EU clients. Contract to develop www.business.govt.nz. Planning for Success hits 100,000 copies. Partner with SCORE in Washington to help support US small business owners. Created content for the Bank of New Zealand, delivering their e-newsletter. Created content for National Australia Bank.
Publication of the Investment Ready Guide, Exporting Guide. Develop Dragons Den content for the National Bank. Development of the Wolves Lair, an online enterprise game for schools to teach enterprise and learn how to pitch for capital. Created content for Ulster Bank. Delivered enterprise workshops for ANZ Australia. Developed content MYOB Australia’s business learning portal.
Publication of Starting Up Feasibility Guide. Developed content for the Westpac bank business resource center. Content for the New Zealand and UK Intellectual Property Office and report on intellectual assets. Development of business health check tools.
Developed small business content for Clydesdale Yorkshire Bank.
Developed content for Bank of America’s online business community, our first large US bank. Started to focus on North American banks, exhibiting and presenting at the US Small Business Banking conference.
Commenced delivering small business content and tools into a wide range of North American banks, for example Umpqua, Pinnacle, Comerica, TD, BMO Harris, Iberia, Independent, CIBC, RBC, Fulton, Commerce, First Bank, Sterling.

Glen has been helping small businesses start and grow since 1989. Along the way he has published 6 books on small business development and business planning, created training courses, built e-learning platforms, and worked with a number or organisations on small business content strategy including Microsoft USA, Bank of America, Royal Mail, Virgin Money, MBIE, Inland Revenue, IPONZ, NZTE and the BNZ. Since 2005 Glen has focused on the banking sector, and has built up an extensive knowledge of how banks can engage with the small business segment. He has presented at a number of small business banking conferences, and is sought out as an opinion leader in this space.
Roger Pierce is a serial entrepreneur who understands first-hand what it takes to grow a small business. In addition to helping banks and brands engage small business customers, Roger is the author of small business books and has trained hundreds of entrepreneurs in 5 countries.
